UN CERD Request

UN CERD Request

On July 14, 2023, Ziibiing Lab joined other petitioners, including KAHEA: The Hawaiian-Environmental Alliance and the Transnational Law and Racial Justice Network, to request the adoption of a decision under the Early Warning and Urgent Action Procedures (EWUAP) of the United Nations Committee on the Elimination of Racial Discrimination (CERD) regarding Canadian violations of Indigenous rights in Hawaiʻi through involvement of the Canadian government, corporations, and astronomical entities in the Thirty Meter Telescope project slated for Mauna Kea.

This marks the 4-year anniversary of a Native Hawaiian-led blockade to prevent TMT construction in July 2019 when police forces arrested 38 kūpuna (elders) protecting the mountain.
